We're doing this backwards tonight: Part 3/3

I have to write tonight's post in three parts and backwards, so please either enjoy my story in reverse or, si vous voulez, go to part 1. I will preface this post by saying it will probably be only applicable to anyone who knows ASL.

WORDS I LEARNED TODAY in two parts: words that are the same as ASL / words that are different

SAME AS ASL:
better (meilleur - for the sake of facial grammar)
name (nom/ je m'appelle)
deaf (sourd)
adopt
work (travail)
president
waitress
boss (but on opposite shoulder from signing hand)
French
Laurent Clerc
Night
internet
Nice to meet you (except instead of ASL nice, ASL happy)

DIFFERENT:
numbers
LSF 1 = ASL 10
LSF 2 = ASL handshape L
3=3
4=4
5=5
LSF 6 = two hands (ASL 5 and 10)
LSF 7 = (ASL 5 and handshape L)
LSF 8 = (ASL 5 and 3)
LSF 9 = (ASL grow)
LSF 10 = (ASL 5 and 5)
for more counting in LSF, follow this link:

letters
LSF A= ASL A handshape thumb out
B=B
C=C
D=D (but bring that thumb in closer to the pointer finger)
E=E
F=F with thumb on outside of pointer finger
G=G
H= ASL bullshit
I=I
J=Y handshape, move it like a J in ASL
K=K
L=L
M=think ASL H with one more finger (for an M)
N= ASL H
O-S=O-S ASL
T= ASL F with thumb on inside of pointer finger
U-W =U-W ASL
X= ASL V handshape bent
Y=Y
Z=Z
Just as soon as I finished typing that all out, I found this. You may now applaud my attempt at CL:fingerspelling

More things that are different:
America= CL:O near location for uncle; sweep it up to CL:5 in front of forehead. WHY? Glad you asked.

English= ASL for gay, but with the handshape you would use for word (instead of G)
Restaurant= ASL later, but with a bent L (like a one finger CL:C)
Friend= CL:B with your thumb out. Palm up, low in the signing area and moving back and forth between you and your friend!
Email = ASL sign for New York but with pinky finger tucked in (CL:A)
Paris= er, the best I know how to explain this: ASL "Philippines" but with "Island" hand palm up
Arrondissement= ASL "Cookie" but instead of rotating, just move CL:C hand clockwise around palm. Imagine describing this with your hands:

School= ASL "Book" but with fingertips of right hand over left (make sense?) up in front of your face
CODA= (this is a tough one to describe) right hand: CL:O palm left; left hand CL:O palm right. put those on top of each other in front of your chest (same place for signs like fancy, cool, satisfied) and open both to CL:C
Library= both hands CL:B open facing each other and move to right, as if to use your hands to describe this:

Metro= ASL enter or born
Here= CL:Y both hands, palms in (so like, ASL "institution" with Y hands but side by side and not on top of each other) move down once
How are you?= ASL "haha" both hands, palms facing up
Culture= ASL smart with both hands
Deaf Culture= same handshape and movement, but from right below your chest
Mother= ASL girl
Diet (as in soda) = ASL friendly (or what I think is ASL friendly)
Day= ASL really/true
Pate= ASL cheese
Hearing person= ASL listening/to hear
Morning= ASL clear/obvious

This is all I can remember for now.. it was a wonderful experience and I can't wait to learn more. NOW! go to Part 2 to read about how I met the amazing new friends who taught me these words!

  1. You will definitely need to help out with the Cultural Fair in Olathe. The DCC booth will be about Sign Languages worldwide. You'll need to be there as a 'show-and-tell' prop!
